DW 10-01: The Pilot

A Guide to Classic Who references in new Who.


 Doctor Who series 10 episode 1 in which Bill meets the Doctor.

  • [NEW]  Nardole - River Song's assistant in the Doctor Who (2005) episode "The Husbands of River Song."  His head was removed and used by the robot body of the Hydroflax.  When he appeared again in "The Return of  Doctor Mysterio" as the Doctor's new companion, Nardole noted:  "You cut me out of Hydroflax because you were worried you'd be lonely."  This episode suggests he has a robot body.

  • [OLD]  The TARDIS - The Doctor's time and space travel vehicle.  TARDIS stands for Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space.  Like a lot of Time Lord technology, it is "bigger on the inside."  The Doctor stole his Tardis when fleeing Gallifrey.  It is an older model ("Type 40") and unreliable, often ending up in the wrong location and the chameleon circuit - designed to make the Tardis appear inconspicuous in any surroundings it appears has failed so it always appears as a police telephone box from 1960s England.   It is often implied to have a personality, which was given form in "The Doctor's Wife" and previously disliked Clara (who later entered the Doctor's time scar) and refused to visit Tranzelor (which had the Doctor's time scar and also had a future version of the TARDIS).  In  Doctor Who (1963) Season 1 ("An Unearthly Child") the Doctor's granddaughter Susan claimed to have invented the name, but later other Time Lords use it (although some call it a TT Capsule.)    In the Fourth Doctor story Doctor Who (1963) Season 18 ("Full Circle") Romana states that the TARDIS's true weight in Alzarius' Earth-like gravity was 5 times 10^5 kg (about 50.000 tonnes on Earth).

  • [NEW]  River Song - The Doctor's wife.  Or one of them, at least.


  • [OLD]  The Doctor - The central character of both series of Doctor Who.  This is the Twelfth Doctor, the thirteenth face he's had (leading to the comment about faces later in the episode).

  • [OLD]  The Daleks - One of the Doctor's greatest enemies from the old series and the new.


Sonic Screwdrivers...

  • [OLD]  The Third Doctor's Sonic - Also known as the Mark II, the second form of the sonic screwdriver shown to be used by the Doctor.

  • [OLD]  The Third & Fourth Doctor's Sonic - Also known as the Mark III, the third form of the sonic screwdriver shown to be used by the Doctor.

  • [OLD]  The Fifth Doctor's Sonic - Another version of the Mark III, with more red.  It was destroyed in Doctor Who (1963) Season 19 ("The Visitation") but he appears to have repaired it or made a copy.

  • [OLD]  The Seventh Doctor's Sonic - Sometimes called the Mark IV, very similar to the Mark III, but with the red in different places.  He wasn't shown having one until his appearance in the TV movie.

  • [OLD]  The Ninth & Tenth Doctor's Sonic - Sometimes called the Mark VII, used by the Ninth Doctor and the Tenth until it burnt out in Doctor Who (2005) Series 3 ("Smith & Jones").

  • [OLD]  The Tenth Doctor's Sonic - Sometimes called the Mark VIII, used by the Tenth Doctor after the previous one burnt out in Doctor Who (2005) Series 3 ("Smith & Jones").  Similar, but slightly larger than the previous version it changed appearance a number of times.  It was briefly used by the Eleventh Doctor during his first adventure Doctor Who (2005) Series 5 ("The Eleventh Hour") before being destroyed.

  • [OLD]  The Eleventh & Twelfth Doctor's Sonic - Sometimes called the Mark IX, used by the Eleventh Doctor, given to him at the end of Doctor Who (2005) Series 5 ("The Eleventh Hour") to replace the Tenth Doctor's which was destroyed earlier in the episode.  It was damaged during the during the adventures of the Twelfth Doctor Doctor Who (2005) Series 5 ("The Magician's Apprentice") and claim he was using wearables instead, changing to Sonic Sunglasses until being given a new model of Sonic Screwdriver by the TARDIS.

  • [1ST]  The Vault - The first appearance of this object which has absolutely no foreshadowing whatsoever.  The marking on it appear to be similar to High Gallifreyan.


  • [NEW]  Psychic Paper - Used by the Doctor as fake ID, first appeared in Doctor Who Series 1 ("The End of the World.")  It was used as a way to contact the Doctor in Doctor Who Series 2 ("New Earth.")

  • [1ST]  Unnamed planet - Possibly the first appearance of this planet.
  • [OLD]  Movellans - A humanoid robot race who were enemies of and actually partially defeated the Daleks in the old series.


  • [OLD]  Memory wipe-touch - The Doctor did this to Donna Noble (to save her life) in Doctor Who (2005) Series 4 ("Journey's End).  The Time Lords previously wiped the memories of the Second Doctor's companions. Jamie McCrimmon and Zoe Heriot (Doctor Who (1963) Season 6 ("The War Games")).  While using a Time Lord device to attempt to erase Clara Oswald's  memories of him in Doctor Who Series 9 ("Hell Bent") the Doctor ended up with his memories of her being wiped (Clara's theme plays briefly in this scene.)
